The county is named after Richard Montgomery (1738-1775), a major general during the Revolutionary War who was killed at the Battle of Quebec. The area of Montgomery County is about 502 square miles. The county was formed in 1779 from Anson County, and it is populated today by 26 thousand residents. Troy is the county seat of Montgomery County.
