Northampton County is located on the northern border of North Carolina. The county is named after James Compton, 5th Earl of Northampton (1687-1754), a British peer and politician. The county seat of Northampton County is Jackson. The county's area exceeds 551 square miles. Formed in 1741 from Bertie County, today Northampton County counts over 17 thousand inhabitants.
