Do I need a visa to Germany as an American?

Nope—Americans can visit Germany and other Schengen countries without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Just bring a passport that's valid (recommended for three to six months after your trip). Starting around 2025–2026, you'll also need an ETIAS authorization (a simple online permit, not a full visa). For longer stays—work, study, or a longer stay—you’ll need to apply for the appropriate national visa or residency permit. Otherwise, enjoy the beer and bratwurst!
